These fish are typical on any given day on the lower Sacramento River. Some of these photos are from the Pit River, the upper Sacramento and Hat Creek. Different places fish better at different times.

Pitt River

1/7/12... The Pitt River has been fishing well throughout the fall and winter. There hasn't been muich rain and the river has remained clear and fishable. The lower reaches hold some very nice fish and 18 inchers are not uncommon. Most of the fish are in the 12 to 16 inch range but they are fat and full of fight. The weather is still holding with daytime temps in the 50's and 60's and the fish are there and biting. The fish pictured above was the big fish of the day and it is a fat one as you can see.

Trinity River Steelhead.....yeeeehaw!

12/27.......It was a perfect late December day; cool, overcast and very few fishermen (a rarity).....We fished an upper stretch and found some fish. The bite early was tough as the fish seemed educated and as soon as we saw the take and set the hook they came right at us and we never got a solid hook set and we lost the first 3 or 4 fish. As the day warmed (slightly) the fish got more aggressive. We netted several nice fish that ranged from 24" to 28". Both of the big bucks fought long and hard with some acrobatics to boot!

Lower Sac w/ Greg and John

12/21..... The days are cool and short this time of year but the fish didn't seem to notice. Greg and John are neighbors and fishing buddies and did very well on a tough windy day. We boated 7 nice ones and a couple of little guys (and we missed a few too). These guys were tough on each other but the ribbing was good natured and effective. I am sure there are many more trip and many more fish in their future. They were both pretty casters and fisherman although Greg could not resist the urge to reach down and pull the hook out of one of his better fish while trying to help me net the big guy....LOL...Oooops!

Lower Sac w/ Ken and Dave

12/8.... Lifelong friends, Dave and Ken, fished a 1/2 day and while the bite was a bit slow they both managed to land some beautiful fish. These two 18" beauties fought hard but finally succumbed to their skill and then the net. Dave and Ken ribbed each other in good natured competition, and they were fun to fish with.  They were both skilled fishermen and will catch many more fish together. Dave caught his just above the Sundial bridge and had the crowd above cheering him on.

Trinity  success

11/26-27..... Bill and Bill decided to try their luck on the Trinity on a crowded Thanksgiving weekend and while the fishing was tough and there were a few boats and bank fishermen we managed to land and release 4 adults and few 1/2 pounders to boot. We hooked and lost a few too. The fish were on the small side, 3 to 4 lbs, but they offered a hard fight with some acrobatics. The fish pictured took some extra effort as the line got wrapped around the rod tip when the hook was set and then we had to guide him under several tree limbs that were hanging in the water.
