These fish are typical on any given day on the lower Sacramento River. Some of these photos are from the Pit River, the upper Sacramento and Hat Creek. Different places fish better at different times.

Hot Hand Tim....and Rob too.

10/20....... Rob and Tim drifted last spring and did pretty well with Rob be dubbed 'Hot Hand' This fall on their return trip it was Tim getting the majority of the action (Rob didn't do too bad either). It was a bright and beautiful fall day on the lower Sac and there were salmon everywhere. The annual spawn was on and it was a magnificent sight; 10 to 30 lb. river missles cavorting in the shallows and making huge splashes.

The big trout were close by and Rob and Tim stuck some really big ones. Both guys hooked and played 20 inch plus fish and we even landed a couple! The  biggest fish came between the Cypress St and Bonnyview bridges. Both of the big ones you see pictured above were hard fighters and took both anglers into their backing. In this case I think the really big ones got away. Both Tim and Rob lost a ballistic trout that just hit, took off and didn't look back. It was an exciting day and I think we topped the last trip so the bar is a bit high now.

Tim and Rob are good casters and fishermen and true sportsmen too. It is always a pleasure to share a day with class fishermen like Tim and Rob.

Jeremy's Journey

...10/14.... Jeremy is just starting out on his life as a fly fishermen. I have seen the addiction many times before. Jeremy has all the signs.....LOL! Since this was his first ever drift trip he had some of the usual issues like what to do when you hook a big fish and he hooked several but the fish here are big and wiley. He did land a few small ones but this fiesty 17 incher was the prize of the day.

We had a great time spotting salmon and learning a few casting tricks and of course the art of watching your indicator. Jeremy is a terrific sportsman and has the drive to learn the art of flyfishing. Great day Jeremy, Thanks!

Andrew and his Dad, Brian.

10/13.....Andrew had such a great day on his previous trip he brought his Dad along for another trip. As fate would have it, it was, of course, a tough day on the river. Even though it was a crowded Saturday, we hooked enough fish to make it a good day but just couldn't seem to get them into the net. This was Brian's first time fly fishing and while we did get him into fish, dealing with manual fly tackle was a challenge. After practicing on several fish Brian was able to land this beauty just below the #44 bridge.

This one hit an orange bead just below some holding salmon. I sure he was surprised:-)! The water was fast so Brian played him down and we netted and released him. We worked hard for that fish and there was a collective sigh as the net slipped under this beautiful fat 'bow.

Brain and Andrew were good sports and the weather was perfect and we enjoyed the day as always. It is always fun to sher ther river and a few fish with great people!

A great day with Andrew!

10/5.... This was Andrew's first ever drift fishing trip and his first ever trip on the lower Sac. He fished well and the fishing God's rewarded him! I believe we netted 10 nice fish with the largest measuring in at 19 inches. We netted this beautiful hen just above the Cypress St bridge. We hooked another one in the same run but couldn't get it into the net.

This healthy hen was fat and hit on a cinnamon Foxes poopah! She fought hard as Andrew skillfully guided her into the net.... What a beauty!  We had a fun time on the river and lost and missed another half dozen fish! It was a good day to say the least!

We drifted from the Posse grounds to Bonneyview then took a break for lunch at the San Francisco Deli then finished the day with a float from the Posse grounds to the aqua golf ramp. The evening float started off slow with no action for the first hour or so but ended with a flurry as we hit 3 fish in the last hour. We experimented with our underwater camera and it came out quite nice!

Andrew is a terrific sportman and a good fisherman! He played his fish in quickly and we released them unharmed (maybe a little 'lock jaw'.......LOL). Thanks for a great day!

Mike and Marc on theTrinity (early season)

10/3........ The north state had just come off a really hot spell with several days over 100 but we had this trip 'planned' so we persevered. The water was low and very clear and we had to drag the boat through several shallow riffles. Ultimately we netted 3 fish and missed a couple also, so we enjoyed the day and learned a lot about flyfishing for steelies on the Trinity. This was the first steelhead trip for both fisherman and although it was tough day we enjoyed ourselves immensely.  We saw quite a few fish (salmon and steelhead) and they seemed to be on the move.

Marc hooked and played his first ever steelie in a shallow riffle just above Lime Saddle. When the fish hit it litterally ripped the line from his hand! The fish stayed upstream from us as we drifted down. It went airborn several times and since it was the first real action of the day we were jazzed! We netted a nice 22 incher after a long fight in fast water. Marc took this fish on a hare's ear of his own creation. Nice job Marc!

We continued down to a big run upstream from the Bagdad launch where we hooked and played 2 more adults landing one. This one turned out to be a nice 25 inch buck that fell victim to a bead. It was a great battle in fast water and this brute probably weighed in at 5 lbs.

It certainly looks like we can expect a good to great season on the Trinity this year! These fish are in absolute pristine condition!
